Kyoto

Kyoto was the imperial capital of Japan for over 1000 years, starting in 794 AD. The capital transferred to Tokyo in 1868 but Kyoto has maintained its historical significance. Home to over 3000 temples and shrines, it largely escaped damage in World War II and is especially culturally and historically important as a result. Moreso than larger cities like Tokyo and Osaka, Kyoto has continued to embrace tradition over modernity. Geisha culture, traditional tea ceremonies, and kimono making help keep Kyoto connected to its past.
