Sumida Park

Day 2 in Tokyo started with a stroll through Sumida Park on our way to Senso-ji. Sumida Park is a linear park that runs along both sides of the Sumida River between the Taito and Sumida wards in Tokyo. Less than a 5 minute walk from Asakusa Station, it was only a slight diversion on our walk to Senso-ji.

From the station we walked towards Azumabashi Bridge. We went down to the Sumida River Terrace on the near side of the bridge, but on the far side we could see Tokyo Skytree and the golden Asahi Beer Hall flame.

The wide paved stone path was lovely to walk along, with flowers lining one side and the river on the other. We strolled along the river for a while and then took one of the sets of steps up to the park itself.

The park’s Promenade features a paved walking pathway, playgrounds, and other trails and green spaces. It is a prime cherry blossom destination in the spring but is equally stunning in June when the hydrangeas are in bloom. Known as “Ajisai (Hydrangea) Road”, we were lucky enough to see the over 10,000 pink, purple, and blue flowers at their peak.

Our leisurely walk to Senso-ji through Sumida Park took about half an hour and was well worth the minor detour. We saw some Tokyo landmarks, enjoyed a beautiful riverside walk, and admired the thousands of gorgeous hydrangeas.
