Ketchikan

Located at the southernmost entrance to the Inside Passage, Ketchikan was the final port on our Alaska cruise. I love how visit-ketchikan.com describes the city: “Ketchikan is best known for three things: feisty salmon, idyllic scenery, and an incredibly rich Alaska Native culture.”

This was the only port where I wasn’t sure what to do. The two most popular types of excursions seemed to be fishing and float planes. Fishing didn’t interest anyone in our group, and while I would have loved to take a float plane, it wasn’t in our budget. (Plus there were two fatal float plane crashes in Ketchikan in the early part of the summer, which made us wary.)

This was the port where I was hoping to see bears so I wanted something that would give us a chance at that (without a helicopter or floatplane ride). We ended up booking a private tour that included a stop Herring Cove, a hike in the Tongass National Forest, and a tour of Totem Bight State Park.
