Old Montréal

Vieux-Montréal, or Old Montréal, was established by French settlers in 1642, making it one of the oldest city neighborhoods in North America. Many of the squares and buildings and all of the charm remain from the 17th century settlement. Our hotel was located in Old Montréal so we naturally saw a lot of the area just in our comings and goings. In addition to our wanderings through Old Montréal, I followed an excellent walking tour from Lonely Planet’s pocket guide to Montréal and Québec City. The easy loop took me about an hour at a leisurely pace. Leaving from Le …

Basilique Notre-Dame

We did a lot of outdoor exploring in Montréal, enjoying both the city’s streets and green spaces. The only indoor attraction that we visited that required a ticket for entry was the Basilique Notre-Dame. The gorgeous Gothic Revival cathedral dominates Plaza d’Armes. Designed by James O’Donnell in 1823, the architect was so enamored with his own work that he converted to Catholicism so that he could be buried there. After enjoying the exterior of the church, we waited on a short line for tickets and went inside. While the outside of the cathedral was beautiful, the inside was absolutely breath-taking. …

Parc du Mont-Royal

Known as “The Mountain”, Parc du Mont-Royal sits high above Montréal, offering an easy escape into nature from the city below. Parc du Mont-Royal is Montréal’s version of NYC’s Central Park and was, in fact, designed by the same landscape architect, Frederick Law Olmsted. The 200+ hectare park is a haven for outdoor activity year round, from biking and boating in the warmer months to ice skating and snow shoeing in the colder ones. You can get to the park through a combination of the Metro (Mont-Royal station) and the bus (#11), but we opted to walk. We really enjoyed …

Montréal City Highlights

Our trip to Montréal was different from most of our trips, both because we went without the kids and because our itinerary wasn’t fully planned out. Typically I have all of our activities booked or at least planned ahead of time and we figure out our dining at the last minute. But this trip was the opposite. Because this trip was just my husband and I and we were celebrating our anniversary, we had dinner reservations at nice restaurants for two of our three nights, but our days were wide open for just wandering around the city, exploring its main …

Portugal Travel Tips

Portugal is a bit of a hidden gem in Europe. It is less visited than its Western European neighbors of Spain, France and Italy but is gaining in popularity as more and more people discover how much it has to offer. For a small country, it has huge diversity – incredible cities, gorgeous river and mountain scenery, stunning cliffside beaches. If it is not already on your European travel list, it should be. Visit as much of the country as you can. Portugal is roughly 150 miles north to south and 135 miles east to west, making it relatively easy …

Residentas Áurea

We were in Lisbon over Easter weekend and we had a really difficult time finding an available hotel. After much searching for alternatives, we stumbled upon Residentas Áurea, a luxury apartment building in the Baixa district. Residentas Áurea offers the following apartment options: studio, classic 1 bedroom, 1 bedroom duplex, 1 bedroom loft, and premium 1 bedroom. The building was locked with a coded entry system that was a little finicky but we got used to it. There is a lobby area but it is not staffed by anyone. The hallway was oddly gray and completely flat. The doors were …

Carvoeiro Tours

We booked our Benagil Cave boat tour through South Explorers as a tour that included round-trip transportation from Lagos, a boat ride from Carvoeiro, and a walk along the Algar Seco boardwalk. Antonio from South Explorers booked the boat tickets through Carvoeiro Tours. With more than 30 years in the business and 4 boats leaving from two different locations (Carvoeiro and Portimão), Carvoeiro Tours is a well-respected and experienced tour company. Their operation ran smoothly from the stand on the edge of the beach. They fitted us all for life jackets (which were more comfortable than most!), showed us where …

South Explorers Review

When we added the Algarve to our trip, one of the main reasons was to see Benagil Cave. But choosing to stay in Lagos without a rental car made a trip to Benagil a little more complicated. There were plenty of boat tours that left from Lagos to Benagil but I read that it was a long, bone-jarring, sea-sickness-inducing trip. I posted a question about alternatives on the Travel Portugal FaceBook group and Antonio from South Explorers responded that he offered a Benagil by Boat and Algarseco tour that included ground transportation from Lagos to Carvoeiro. It was exactly what …

Belmar Spa & Beach Resort Review

Located in Lagos less than 5 minutes from Porto Mós beach, Belmar Spa & Beach Resort offers apartments of various sizes from studio to 3 bedroom. The resort has 4 pools, including an adults-only pool and an indoor pool. There is a full service restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as an indoor bar and a poolside bar. We had a standard 2 bedroom apartment and it was a great space for our family. The shared space included a living room with plenty of seating and a kitchen with a small dining area. The kids room had …

Chalet Saudade Review

We hadn’t originally planned to spend a night in Sintra but thought it would be a good way to break up the trip from Porto to Lagos, as well as keep us from having to use one of our Lisbon days for a day trip to Sintra. We are so glad we ended up spending the night at Chalet Saudade. Chalet Saudade is more of a bed and breakfast than a traditional hotel. Built in the 1890s and completely refurbished starting in 2009, this beautiful old home is full of charm. There are 15 different rooms, all named after trees: …
