Capilano Suspension Bridge

After a half a day exploring Grouse Mountain, we hopped on the free shuttle that took us directly from Grouse Mountain to Capilano Suspension Bridge Park. (Note that you need to have pre-purchased tickets to Capilano in order to use this inter-attraction shuttle.) As of summer 2019, tickets to Capilano are $53.95 CAD for adults, $29.95 CAD for youth 13-16 and $16.95 CAD for children 6-12. While Grouse Mountain tickets are date-specific, Capilano tickets are good for any single day up to 1 year from the purchase date. My husband and I had been to Capilano almost 20 years ago …

Grouse Mountain

There were three things on our “must see” list for Vancouver – Grouse Mountain, Capilano Suspension Bridge, and Stanley Park. We had two full days in Vancouver before the cruise, which was perfect. We dedicated one day to the nature sites outside the city (Grouse and Capilano) and one day to the city itself. Grouse Mountain is about 30 minutes outside of downtown Vancouver and on a clear day it holds a commanding view of the city. It offers both winter and summer activities for year-round fun. In the summer, your ticket includes the gondola ride to the top, access …

Guatemala Travel Tips

DSC_0889

Due to safety concerns, traveling to Guatemala with children can be stressful.  My Guatemala family travel tips below can help you plan an amazing visit to Tikal so you can enjoy the site without the stress. There are no border fees to enter Guatemala. When crossing from Belize to Guatemala, Belize charges a $40 BZ ($20 US) exit fee.  There is NO fee to enter or exit Guatemala but many unscrupulous agents will tell you there is a 10 quetzales (about $1.35 US) immigration fee.  They will then pocket the money.  (Literally.  They just put it into their pockets.)  If …

Belize Travel Tips

Belize is an amazing family travel destination that offers both beaches and jungles.  Check out my Belize family travel tips below for help planning your own unbelizeable vacation! Split your visit between the jungle and the beach. Belize offers two very unique experiences.  The jungle has Mayan sites, cave adventures, hiking and waterfalls, wildlife, and more.  The beach has the second largest barrier reef in the world.  Neither should be missed.  It is like getting two vacations in one. Start your visit in the jungle. If you split your time between the jungle and the beach, start in the jungle.  …

Safety in Belize and Guatemala

DSC_0888

Safety in Belize While safety is always in the back of my mind while traveling, it immediately moves to the forefront when you are planning a trip that includes your kids.  When my oldest son wanted to choose Belize for our family trip this year, I knew next to nothing about it.  A few quick google searches and it became clear that we would have to research further on the safety issue before agreeing to this trip. Belize consistently ranks in the top ten countries in the world for per capita murders.  It has been as high as #2 on the list …

Tuff e Nuff Tours Review

Tuff e Nuff Tours operates water and land based tours out of Ambergris Caye.  They offer tours to all 5 major Mayan archaeological sites in Belize, as well as the ATM cave.  They offer many other land-based tours, including cave tubing, zip lining, and visits to the Belize Zoo.  On the island, they offer sailing, fishing, snorkeling, and diving tours. Tuff e Nuff’s water-based tours are conveniently based off the dock at Coco Beach Resort, where we were staying.  We booked ahead of time directly through the company but could have also booked through the resort’s concierge and charged it …

Coco Beach Resort Review

DSC_0147

At our last dinner in Belize, we each picked one of our favorite memories from the trip – not necessarily a favorite activity or place, but a moment that stuck out to us.  For me, it was the moment we stepped off the dock at Coco Beach and were given a tour of the property.  I wish I could freeze that moment in time – the boys’ faces lit up like Christmas morning.  Every thing he pointed out got a bigger reaction than the thing before.  Just when I thought their faces couldn’t get any brighter, he would point something …

Roxy Ortiz Tour Review

I challenge you to research Tikal and not come across the name Roxy Ortiz.  Every google search about Tikal guides brings up her name.  Every TripAdvisor forum post about Tikal guides mentions her name.  Every guide book has her name at the top of the list for Tikal guides.  She is synonymous with Tikal. We were wavering about whether or not to make the trip to Tikal at all, and then whether to do it as a day trip or an overnight.  The idea of an overnight trip was appealing for several reasons, but the logistics of a day trip …

Jungle Lodge Review

There are three hotels inside Tikal National Park – Jaguar Inn, Tikal Inn, and Jungle Lodge.  Jaguar Inn is the lowest priced and offers both bungalow rooms and tents.  This is the only place to legally camp in the park.  They have their tents set up on stone platforms under a roof so you have good protection from the elements.  The tents include mattress, sheets, access to shared bathrooms and showers, and use of the hotel amenities.  For budget travelers and those who enjoy camping, Jaguar Inn is a unique option. Tikal Inn is the middle of the road option …

Black Rock Lodge Review

Black Rock Lodge is a beautiful eco-lodge located deep in the jungle of the Cayo District of Belize.  The lodge is about 30 minutes from San Ignacio, but the majority of that trip is spent on their long, bumpy 7 mile dirt driveway.  Driving to the lodge is an adventure that is probably best left to the experts.  While you can rent a 4×4 and drive to Black Rock Lodge, the road is bumpy, narrow, and teetering on the edge of a cliff in many places.  We were more than happy to let their expert guides handle the drive there …
