USA Transfers Review

There are plenty of options to get from the Cancun airport to the hotel zone – bus, taxi, rental car, shared shuttle, private transfer. We wanted to book private transportation ahead of time and there was no shortage of companies available. Nothing screams US tourist like booking with a company called USA Transfers, but they had well over 6,000 five star google reviews so we went ahead and booked them despite the name. It was really easy to make a reservation online through their website. I just entered our hotel, travel dates and times, the number of passengers, and selected …

Aventuras Mayas Review

In planning our quick spring break trip to Mexico, I knew that we would spend most of our time at the resort but that we also wanted to take at least one tour to get out and explore the area a little bit. I was most interested in doing a cenote tour. I wanted to avoid the cruise-ship style, cattle call tours that stopped at 5 hotels and picked up 40 people for an overcrowded, chaotic experience. In the weeks prior to the trip, I looked into a few private tours but none of them worked out. I had trouble …

Hilton Cancun Mar Caribe All-Inclusive Resort

We stayed at the Hilton Cancun Mar Caribe All-Inclusive Resort for spring break this year. Full disclosure: we are not your typical all-inclusive resort guests. It’s not really our style of travel, which is why we haven’t stayed in one before. We don’t eat or drink a ton. We appreciate friendly staff and great service but are uncomfortable with anything individualized, like a private butler or concierge. We love a beautiful resort and well-appointed rooms but don’t need anything overly luxurious. And a day at a spa is my worst nightmare. 🙂 That being said, we think most things are …

Cenote Tour

Found throughout the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico, cenotes are natural sinkholes formed by the collapse of limestone bedrock. The resulting holes fill with water, providing ancient Mayans with a water source and today’s tourists with beautiful swimming destinations. There are over 6,000 cenotes in Mexico, but only about 150 of them are accessible to visitors. But that’s still a lot of options! You can choose to visit them on your own or as part of a tour. Because we did not rent a car while we were in Cancun, we opted to book a tour with Aventuras Mayas. Their Mayan …

Cancun Trip Planning

Well, this will be a short post! The goal of this spring break trip was easy. And it doesn’t get much easier than an all-inclusive resort. The main question was what area to stay in – Cancun (inside the hotel zone or not), Playa del Carmen, Tulum. There were a lot of great options outside of Cancun but because we were trying to keep it easy and because it was a relatively short trip (Monday through Friday), we ultimately decided to stay in the Cancun hotel zone. It is super close to the airport and there are so many resort …

Costa Rica Travel Tips

Costa Rica is a great place for a family vacation. You can be super active and do tours like zip lining and whitewater rafting, or you can relax and do easy hikes and soak in hot springs. With beaches and rain forests easily accessible around the country, there is something for everyone in Costa Rica. Don’t be afraid of the green season. The rainy (or “green”) season in Costa Rica is roughly from the beginning of May to the end of November. Most people instinctually want to go in the dry season (who doesn’t want sun in the forecast each …

Costa Rica Traveling Tours by Amanda Review

Traveling with a group of 16 can be overwhelming so I knew there would be a lot of benefit to working with a travel agent on this trip. I found Amanda through a FaceBook group and TripAdvisor, and she booked all of our tours and transfers. (We booked our own hotels because I thought it would be easier for each family to individually handle their reservations and figure out what kind of room they wanted, what they were willing to spend, etc.). I first reached out to Amanda to book a trip for spring 2022. But with covid restrictions still …

Tulemar Resort Review

Much of this trip to Costa Rica was a repeat for me and my husband, but part of the reason I really wanted to go back to Manuel Antonio was so that we could stay at Tulemar Resort. On our first trip our splurge hotel was Nayara Gardens in Arenal, and this time our splurge was Tulemar. Although Tulemar is an award winning luxury resort, I was most attracted to it because of its reputation for abundant wildlife on the property. I had seen so many pictures and videos of sloths hanging from the trees, monkeys playing on the balconies, …

Manuel Antonio Nature Tours Review

Our private guide for our group in Manuel Antonio was Edwin, the owner of Manuel Antonio Nature Tours. (See my full trip report here.) We met Edwin at the entrance to the park where he guided us through the security screening (no food is allowed to be brought into the park) and showed us the route we were going to take for our hike. Unfortunately for us, the main trail was closed the day we were there so we had to walk along a parallel road (the yellow line on the map below). Despite the slightly less scenic route we …

Manuel Antonio National Park

One of the highlights of my first trip to Costa Rica was our tour of Manuel Antonio National Park. The abundant wildlife and beautiful beach made the park a great place to spend a half a day. I was excited for our kids to get to experience it too. We had a private tour guide for our group of 16. Our travel agent arranged for a driver to pick us up at the hotel and we met our guide at the entrance to the national park. The main trail in the park leads to the beach, and the first section …
